What is "meta"?
The other day, Judy and I were talking about the movie Hocus Pocus, which is one of my favorite Halloween movies. Normally I think Halloween movies are a little scary and needlessly violent but I think this one really has a good message and it really speaks to our societies fixation with youth and beauty and it tells you that youth really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Those witches keep stealing people’s youth and beauty and they’re still pretty unattractive, so I told Judy that’s what the movie’s main message was.
I know what you’re thinking? Why would you watch a Halloween movie when it’s not Halloween? Well, I found an old VHS tape that i thought had Rudolph the Rednosed Reigndeer on it and it turns out my grandmother had taped a ABC Family 31 days of Halloween marathon over it. I was pretty disappointed, but Judy and I ended up having a pretty engaging conversation about it so I guess it was all worthwhile.
Anyway, The reason I made this video is because Judy said that the story about Youth and Beauty reminded her that one of the witches was in a shampoo commercial, and that was meta. I had to straighten her out and tell her what meta actually means, and then I figured that I might as well share the info with you guys too – in case there’s more confusion.
The cat talking is meta, though.
Can you think of any more examples?
